Go To Court, Odigie-Oyegun Tells Sylva

The All Progressives Congress on Monday ordered a fresh governorship primary. The National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said this at the end of the party’s National Working Committee meeting, in Abuja. He told one of the party’s aspirants, Timpire Sylva, who is also a former governor of the state to go to court if he was dissatisfied with the decision of the party. “Mr. Sylva can go to court because that is what the court is meant for,” Odigie-Oyegun said. He explained that the party was compelled to take the decision to protect its established record of free, fair and credible primaries. The party chairman added that the Bayelsa debacle was the main issue discussed at the meeting because the party was determined to jealously guard its records. According to him, the NWC sees it as a duty to provide a level playing field for all those who aspire to offices in this party. Odigie-Oyegun said, “Unfortunately, in Bayelsa State at Yenagoa, we had serious security challenges and so the process could not meet the standard which this party has set for itself. “And so, we had not alternative but to stop the process by ensuring that the chairman of the panel (Governor Adams Oshiomhole) was effectively moved out of the venue with the help of security agencts and we decided thereafter, that there should be a proper, fresh primary.” Odigie-Oyegun also noted that insinuations that the party would take disciplinary action against a member of the panel who was made to announce a result under duress were misplaced. According to him, the man simply acted to save his life in the circumstance he found himself. In response to a question with respect to the role played by the party in the preparation of the ministerial list of President Muhammadu Buhari, Odigie-Oyegun said it was an internal affair. He also noted that the party would not comment on the travails of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who is being tried by the Code of Conduct Tribunal because “The matter is already in court.” Earlier, the chairman of the APC panel who is also the governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, submitted his report of what transpired in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital last week. Oshiomole told reporters “I really don’t want to go back to those issues; these are not issues that transpired in a bedroom. “I do hope that someday we get to a point where even the media must defend the democratic space, concerning what happened in the stadium. Gunshots were being fired; two AK 47 rifles were recovered as well as live ammunition.”

76 Hungry Boko Haram Members Surrender To Nigerian Military

Dozens of emaciated-looking Boko Haram members begging for food have surrendered in northeast Nigeria, the military and a civilian self-defense fighter said Wednesday. Seventy-six people including children and women gave themselves up to soldiers last Saturday in Gwoza, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of Maiduguri, according to a senior officer. All are being detained at military headquarters in Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram and currently the command center of the war against the Islamic extremists, according to the officer. He insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to journalists. The detainees said many more fighters want to surrender, a self-defense civilian fighter who helped escort them to Maiduguri told The Associated Press. Food shortages could indicate that Nigeria's military is succeeding in choking supply routes of the Islamic extremists who have taken their fight across Nigeria's borders. Some 20,000 people have died in th...
