Traditional Yoruba Society: The Truth Behind ‘blood Money

Many of us got acquainted with the concept of blood money from Nigerian movies and some of us have seen it in real life. In the traditional Yoruba society, blood money tales are very common from time immemorial but how did blood money or money ritual come into being? Why do people who do it die young? Is it a myth? Why does the money go away when the recipient dies? When is it blood money? When is it money rituals? So many questions… In 2013, I was in Modakeke in Osun State. I related well with the locals—many of whom are hardworking, resilient and easy-going. They mind their own businesses. The average Modakeke person, although religious in modern terms, has deep roots in traditional religion. In the town, I noticed some lived in affluence; some in poverty. I saw old men with their wives sitting in front of their mud houses and enjoying the breeze and quiet. Food is cheap, air is clean. No generators to disturb your life. Life is quite easy and peaceful. A lot of the people are cont

Among these measures are the directive by Buhari for the release of 10,000 tonnes of grains from the national strategic grains reserves for national distribution to counter food price increases and the intolerably high exploitation of common people by the trader-class. Buhari has also directed the Minister of Agriculture to ensure that all the able-bodied men and women in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps be assisted to return to farming immediately. This is coming as a reaction to calls for government measures to ease hardship associated with food inflation. Shehu said: “At the t

The governor, who said the 2016 budget was not a reflection of the present economic reality in the country, added that; “By the time they borrow N1.84 trillion to fund their N6.06 billion budget; I wonder how Nigeria will survive in 2017 when the Federal Government will be servicing debt with about 50 percent of its budget.” It has been widely reported that Nigeria wants to raise about $5 billion abroad to cover part of its 2016 budget deficit. This was said to be projected to hit N3 trillion ($15 billion) due to heavy infrastructure spending at a time when the slump in global oil prices has slashed its export revenues.
